Hello Everyone!

My Name is Mengmeng. I have a background as a product designer for nearly four years. Looking back to what I design these years, I always good at writing project pitches or statements, I write a couple of bios. But I haven’t thought deeply about my manifesto as a designer.

I took a look of the required readings. As the whole world industrializes and digital age arrives, the progress of graphic design, especially communication design is developing dramatically. With people’s aesthetics constantly evolving, the pursuit of beauty drives higher requirements and demands for communication design. It is an inevitable tendency that communication design will gain increasing popularity in a variety of industries . They are all the most powerful manifestos of how Italian Futurists, Soviet Constructivists, and German Bauhaus, together with Jessica Helfand’s express their think of art and design or their relationship with new media.

I start to ask myself in my mind. What am I aiming to achieve as a designer? What is a good design for me? What is my opinion of new media. But I found It is really hard for me to answer these broad questions immediately.

I don’t want to start writing big aspiring sentences recklessly. I want to put all my design work in front of me, analysis all the design statement, reflect all my design goals, extract the key words of them, plan out on a brainstorming board and then piece together like a puzzle. Also, I listed some readings about design theory that struck a responsive chord in my heart, some projects and projects that inspiring and had a great impact on my thinking of design.

After all these processes, I feel confident to jot down my thoughts for the Manifesto. I use Miro as a tool for me to type out ideas quickly.

Final reflection

I think this assignment really makes me take a look at my design work and rethink my role as a designer. I enjoyed the process of extract some keywords or main goals of each specific design case, piece them together, and find my own philosophy of design.

I know my manifesto might not be comprehensive, But I’ll see this as a starting point. I’ll continue to reflect and evaluate myself as adesigner at every stage of my study or career and revise it.
